The 2nd International Mahseer Conference offers the unique opportunity to share knowledge and conservation strategies in a place that is deeply committed to conservation. Although the ranges of the various Mahseer species and allies cover much of southern Asia, southeast Asia and upper Mekong River in Yunnan, China, information regarding the taxonomy and distribution of these important species is incomplete.
Like many other migratory freshwater species, Mahseer have undergone population declines in some areas of the world due to habitat loss and over-exploitation. Among the various Mahseer species, one is listed as “Critically Endangered” and others are listed as “Endangered”, “Vulnerable”, or “Near Threatened” or “Data Deficient” in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
