Milkman by Anna Burns review – creepy invention at heart of an original, funny novel
Milkman: A Novel: Burns, Anna: mahseerconference.com: Books
Burns brilliantly contrasts the world of family secrets and gossip with the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland. Winner of the Man Booker Prize This disturbing and compelling novel, set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles of the s, was awarded the Man Booker Prize. I applaud those who could read and finish this book. I found the writing style irritating and hard to follow. I just couldn't see the value of trudging on.
The author had been describing the sky in French with a bevy of trying metaphors and finally the class mutinies. Le ciel est blue! She takes them to the window overlooking the city and demands that they look at the sky, really look at it, and tell her what they see. The amazed, bewildered, unsettled class discovers that the sky is pink, lemon, mauve and orange-red. It can only mean progress.
